How it Works

 

A 3-step integrated approach to reduce pain

kneeYou work hard, play hard and your body takes a toll.  Our goal is to reduce your day-to-day pain, help you move better and ultimately lead a healthier lifestyle. To achieve that we’ve developed a tried-and-true, three-step, integrated treatment plan, including fitness and massage, that addresses both mind and body.

Every session is unique

  1. Assess: Becoming conscious of your posture and movement patterns is the first step. We begin with a personalized assessment of your movement patterns. This gives us key information about what areas we need to focus on – and what we need to correct. From there, we craft a fitness and massage regimen, just for you.
  2. Balance: Based on our assessment, your therapist will determine the best course of treatment and massage to reduce muscle pain, increase range of motion, improve blood flow and bridge connectivity between the body and mind.
  3. Correct: We will make corrections on form, posture and basic body mechanics while you are training to get fit. As well as incorporate corrective exercises to deal with the faulty movement patterns, muscular imbalances and posture deviations.

Sulyn Silbar, Founder

Sulyn Silbar has been a personal trainer for the last 14 years and a life-long athlete. While studying photography and electronic media at the University of Illinois (where she received her BFA), Sulyn participated in long distance cycling events and spent many years thereafter as a triathlete. Eventually this led to over-training, muscular imbalances and injuries. Sulyn realized that some of her muscular imbalances stemmed from poor movement patterns in her teenage years. Slowly she began to incorporate healthy movement into her regular workouts and combined corrective exercise with massage and rehab.

Discovering Her Passion: Sulyn became a personal trainer in 2001 and founded Body + Mind NYC in 2007. Combining her knowledge of athletics and movement patterns, with her skills as a massage therapist and trainer, Sulyn designs personalized treatment plans to bring the client’s body into better muscular balance, correcting faulty movement mechanics and strengthening the body overall.

Credentials: Sulyn is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and graduated from the Massage Therapy program at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in 2006. She has been a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) since 2006. She became certified in Orthopedic Massage in 2010 from the Institute for Pain Management. She has taken over 200 hours of continuing Education since 2010, and continues to do more workshops with Anatomy Trains developer, Tom Myers, among others.

Sulyn has built a team of massage therapists and strength/corrective exercise trainers, to assist more people out of pain and improve their daily lives.

Ericka Clinton

Ericka Clinton is a NY State Licensed Massage Therapist since 1998. She has been a faculty member and administrator at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York City since 2000. She currently serves as the Assistant Dean and Chair of the Clinical Studies Department for the Massage Therapy Program.

Ericka has worked as a massage therapist for NY Presbyterian Medical Center’s Integrative Medicine Program and most recently at the Bendheim Integrative Medicine Center run by Memorial Sloan­ Kettering Cancer Center.

Ericka earned her Massage Therapy Diploma from the Swedish Institute, and has continued studying various forms of structural and myofascial work. She has participated in research projects related to massage therapy as a principal investigator and interviewer. Ericka has also appeared twice on the Martha Stewart Living Radio program and contributed to various articles on massage therapy.

Hanna Solin

Hanna Solin is a NYS ­Licensed Massage Therapist with a background in classical and modern dance, as well as IMX Pilates. She is a graduate of the Swedish Institute. Her client centered integrative approach, emphasizes comprehensive assessment and treatment, incorporating Swedish, trigger point, myofascial release, and neuromuscular facilitation techniques. In practice for over 10 years, Hanna works with a skilled and compassionate touch, listening, to better understand the needs and concerns of her clients in the therapeutic session.

What a find!

As an oft-­injured competitive athlete I first came across Sulyn when she was recommended to me by a team of physical therapists during recovery from major shoulder surgery. I was struggling to stay back on the tennis court and Sulyn immediately identified areas of muscle spasm and tendon irritation and, more importantly, was able to get me back on the court within a matter of a few weeks. I have had regular massages for the past 25 years and Sulyn’s work yields incomparable relief.

More importantly, I have found Sulyn to be an invaluable resource for my medical practice. I recommend Sulyn as the first line of part of a team (including physical therapists) to work on orthopedic issues ­ particularly those involving muscles and tendons. I found Sulyn because I felt I needed more manual work after being successfully discharged from physical therapy for an acute rotator cuff tear. She immediately took my rehab and strengthening to the next level, while also finding and proposing solutions to a multitude of other imbalances and injuries that a lifetime of competitive sports (including gymnastics and collegiate soccer) has afforded me.

Sulyn’s knowledge of anatomy and physiology is unparalleled by anyone who has ever treated me. On multiple occasions, she has accurately articulated how the issue that I’m having must have occurred, by analyzing my movement and posture and/or manipulating soft tissue. For the last 3 years, my regular sessions with Sulyn have kept me training hard on flying trapeze and rock climbing, plus bouts of recreational surfing and skiing, despite chronic issues with my shoulders, hips and back. Getting a nice massage at the spa may be a luxury to some, but for me having body work done is what keeps me moving. I have a bulging disc in my neck from a car accident I was in at the age of 16.  Doctors prescribe painkillers, surgery and not partaking in highly physical activity.  This is not a solution for me as I work as an acrobatic pole performer for a cirque events company and highly physical activity is my way of life.  I wouldn’t be able to train 5-6 days a week, doing what I love, were it not for the help of Sulyn.  She resets me physically, offers advice on supplementing my nutrition, and shows me exercises to take home and put into my conditioning to help strength those muscles that need it.  I have had far less injuries since I started going to Body + Mind on a monthly basis, and the couple I have had, have been minor and I’ve recovered faster from with the help of Sulyn.  I would recommend Body + Mind whether you’re a circus performer, athlete, or just someone dealing with an ongoing injury.  It’s a great place, and it’s really nice to have someone get what I do and what’s going on in my body.

Sulyn is the first person who has been able to make a lasting difference for me in terms of pain and physical fitness.  I’ve been to doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors after injuries and never felt that anyone really took the time to figure out the underlying problems I was having.  Sulyn is an excellent listener, and she has an incredible understanding of anatomy and ability to explain to you what she’s doing and why.  She is determined to figure out what’s causing your issues, fix it, and then give you the stretches or strengthening exercises you need to keep it fixed. I typically leave feeling great and with homework.  She is driven to see you improve in a way you can sustain, instead of just telling you to come back for more, which is the experience I had with chiropractors.  I feel that Sulyn’s approach is both more scientific and more pleasant — she has an incredible ability to figure out what spots need to be worked out so you can feel better right away, and she has the information and experience to help you stay in good shape.
